A Black Millennial’s Guide to Minimalist Living

Early last year, I embarked on a journey to live minimally and let me tell you – it has been liberating! It is not always easy and I often fail; However, I am learning how to reduce 1) my environmental waste contribution and 2) my level of involvement in helping capitalism thrive.

Here, I present five (5) of my tested and approved tips for minimalist living:

1. De-clutter your wardrobe

Take an inventory of what you actually wear and keep that out. For everything else, pack it away and in 3 months make note of what you found yourself reaching for or not. Get rid of the items that you did not miss. It is also helpful to store out of season items until you need them.

2. Use reusable shopping bags

Preferably cotton – if you’re feeling crafty perhaps turn some of those old clothes from above into a shopping bag so avoid spending money 😜 We all know plastic is harmful. Let’s kick the use of plastic grocery bags especially to the curb.

3. Set clear intentions for your day

Setting intentions helps to guide behaviors. With that information you can then determine what is in line with your purpose or what is “doing too much”. It is ok to say no, cancel plans, or to even add things to your day if that serve your purpose. Intentions coupled with affirmations really work to propel us to next level living.

4. Take regular breaks from social media

Tell IG, Facebook, even your phone “BOY BYE!”. Stop living in the false world of people’s representatives. Focus on all things you and your betterment without comparison.

5. Limit exposure to people and things that are not value added.

Our time on this earth is limited. Spend it with the people you enjoy doing things you enjoy. Once you get radical about preserving your time things will change and for the better.
